Volkswagen outlines 2024 electric vehicle onslaught

Volkswagen Australia is set to launch three new electric vehicles in Australia in 2024, in the form of the ID.3, ID.4, and ID.5.

The news heralds a new era of electrification for the marque in Australia, given that it currently does not offer any fully electric models locally.

The company says that production of electric Volkswagens destined for local showrooms will start around October of next year, with deliveries commencing in early 2024.

The ID.4 and ID.5 SUVs are set to land first, with the ID.3 hatch following later on in the year.

Volkswagen Australia have said that it is also interested in getting its hands on the ID.Buzz electric van. But the retro-themed model is unlikely to arrive alongside the aforementioned trio.

Drive reports that the brand hopes to improve on those dates and shift production forwards to mid-2023, with delivery to move to late 2023. However this is still a work in progress.

Volkswagen Australia has lagged behind other regions when it comes to launching its electric products. This, it says, is because Europe was given priority for these nameplates at launch.

The ID.3 and ID.4 in particular are going to be several years old by the time they land in Australia. The ID.3 has been on sale in Europe since 2020, and the ID.4 since 2021.

New Zealand is also set to edge Australia in terms of ID.4 launch. The country’s first ID.4 has already arrived, with deliveries of it and the ID.5 scheduled for next year.

Unlike Australia, New Zealand has incentives in place for electric vehicles, with some brands citing that the incentives have aided them in landing certain plug-in models.

It’s expected that each model will have been facelifted and upgraded from its current form by the time they join the Australian line-up.

Pricing and spec for the ID.3, ID.4, and ID.5 models coming to Australia have yet to be confirmed. It’s expected that there will be a focus on longer range models, with some capable of over 500km of range.
