Tesla is reporting a US$330 million (NZ$478 million) loss for the first three months of the year ahead of the Model 3 sedan launch.
That contrasts with predictions of a US$282 million (NZ$408 million) loss a year earlier, CNN reports.
The company posted revenue of US$2.7 billion (NZ$3.9 billion), more than double from a year earlier, fuelled by shipping a record 25,051 cars.
“I don’t know anything that would prevent us from starting production in July,” Elon Musk, Tesla’s chief executive told CNN ahead of the Model 3 launch.
“There may be something that pops up, but I don’t know what it is today.”
Tesla says it’s “significantly expanding our infrastructure to support Tesla owners”, ahead of the new car becoming available.
More retail, delivery and service locations across the globe and Tesla body repair shops are on the list, alongside doubling the number of charging stations.
