Peugeot 308 awarded Women’s World Car of the Year grand prize

The Peugeot 308 has been awarded the Supreme Winner Women’s World Car of the Year title for 2022 as part of today’s International Women’s Day celebrations.

“This year’s voting was closer than ever,” says Marta Garcia, executive president of WWCOTY. “The jurors had their work cut out for them because each of the candidates represented the best of their segment.”

The victory follows stringent new vehicle testing by 56 women motoring journalists from around the world, with judges in Asia, Europe, South America, and New Zealand.

“The Peugeot 308 is an automobile that offers just about everything you could want in a car,” says New Zealand WWCOTY judge Sandy Myhre.

“It drives very well and it’s hard to believe there’s only a 1.2-litre engine under the bonnet of most versions.”

Set to launch in Australia this year, the much revised new 308 brings more aggressive styling to the hatchback nameplate along with two different plug-in hybrid powertrains (PHEV availability being a first for the model).

“Peugeot has been able to seduce families with a well-thought-out proposition and a very striking image, but also to win over those looking for different powertrains: petrol, diesel, plug-in hybrid and an EV coming next year,” adds Portuguese judge Carla B. Ribeiro.

“All in all, the 308 is a reliable and predictable car, without being boring. It steers directly and has a very short turning circle, which is ideal for the city. PEUGEOT has thought about the best driving position for the driver,” says Rowan Peperkamp, of the Netherlands.

The 308 wasn’t the only model to be awarded as part of today’s WWCOTY announcement, with the group also confirming a slew of class winners.

The Kia Sportage won the award for Best Family SUV, and BMW’s all-new fully electric iX won Best Large SUV.

Two other SUVs also claimed prizes, with the Ford Mustang Mach-E winning Best Family Car and the Jeep Wrangler 4xe winning Best 4×4.

Lastly the Audi e-tron GT won Best Performance Car, and the aforementioned overall winner, the 308, won Best Urban Car.
