The Motor Trade Association of South Australia and Northern Territory has launched a campaign to remind motorists that the best way to protect themselves when purchasing a used vehicle is to buy it from a licensed dealer.
MTA SA/NT chief executive Paul Unerkov and South Australian minister for consumer and business affairs Andrea Michael jointly launched the campaign at the Adelaide Vehicle Centre which is an MTA member.
Unerkov says three out of four used cars are sold privately in South Australia. He says that figure equates to more than 150,000 used vehicles sold with no consumer protections or roadworthy requirements.
“Used cars are being sold privately in South Australia with serious safety defects and hidden damage without any consumer protections,” Unerkov says.
He says buyers need to beware:
“Get it inspected by a qualified mechanic or buy from a licensed dealer.”
