BYD expects to sell 100,000 “new energy vehicles” (NEVs) in Australia in its first five years in the market.
It’s rolling out more battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and is preparing to introduce a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) ute, The Driven.io reports.
BYD has delivered 25,885 cars in Australia since entering the market in late 2022, mostly BEVs like the Atto 3, Seal and Dolphin, and more than 1000 Sealion 6 PHEVs during the last two months, it says.
The target of 100,000 vehicles in five years means BYD will have to sell 25,000 NEVs in each of the remaining three years, which will draw it closer to market leader Tesla, says The Driven.io.
BYD plans to introduce new models to Australia through distributor EVDirect, including the Shark PHEV ute (already in New Zealand) and another undisclosed model which The Driven.io picks could be the Sealion 7 EV SUV.
