BMW Australia has continued to achieve sales growth in a downward-trending market while also seeing a sustained uptick in registrations of its battery electric vehicles (BEVs).
As of the end of September, registrations of BMW models were up 3.2% compared with the corresponding period in 2023.
Highlights among individual model lines included strong growth for the BMW 2 Series Coupé (1259 registrations versus 739 this time last year).
Since their respective launches, new iterations of the 5 Series and X2 have also been popular with customers. The former recorded a 40% increase in registrations (473 versus 339), and the latter saw a 395% upsurge (1283 versus 259).
As with many other model lines, BMW offers a selection of powertrains in the new 5 Series and X2 – from TwinPower Turbo petrol to dual motor fully electric – providing customers with a wide range of choices for their lifestyles and driving conditions.
BMW’s BEVs have significantly boosted volume, with the brand’s locally zero-emission offerings recording a 202% increase in registrations (5562 versus 1869 PYTD).
BMW offers 16 fully electric variants—the most of any manufacturer in Australia—with six of these priced below $91,387. This exempts them from both Luxury Car Tax (LCT) for fuel-efficient vehicles and Fringe Benefits Tax (FBT) for fleet operators. The tax breaks are part of the Federal Government’s efforts to increase the uptake of electric vehicles in Australia as part of its greenhouse gas emissions reduction efforts.
One of the BMWs priced below the critical thresholds, the iX1, has enjoyed a remarkably successful run since its introduction mid-last year. Since the start of 2024, the model—offered in two variants—has had 1948 registrations, meaning it has outsold the petrol X1 variants. The iX1 is also the leader for BEV registrations in the BMW line-up, ahead of the i4 (1592 registrations YTD).
The BMW iX3, now offered in entry-level M Sport guise with a sub-LCT price position, is also up 33% in year-to-date sales, with 794 registrations.
BMW is prospering in the BEV segment overall, maintaining third position for complete electric sales among manufacturers offering these vehicles to the local market.
BMW’s product offensive will continue unabated before the end of 2024, with the imminent arrival of the updated 2 Series Coupé, 3 Series Sedan, and Touring. The BMW M high-performance line-up will also be refreshed with the launch of the enhanced and more powerful M2 Coupé, M3 Sedan, and M3 Touring.
BMW supports its evolving and expanding product range with a full suite of ownership services and experiences.
A five-year, unlimited-kilometre factory warranty headlines this. At the same time, other complimentary elements include emergency calls, full use of café facilities at BMW’s 49 dealerships across the country, and a host of digital assistance services that can be accessed via the continually updated My BMW App.
These digital services connect the driver to the vehicle, deliver updates in real-time, and allow the driver to toggle numerous vehicle functions remotely, from adjusting EV charging aspects to switching on the fan to reduce the cabin’s temperature before departure.
