A shortage of new vehicle stock in New South Wales, Queensland and other states has seen vehicles diverted from Victoria to dealers outside of the region in lock down.
CarAdvice reports that some vehicle manufacturers are taking advantage of cheaper shipping rates to divert cars originally destined for the Port of Melbourne to the ports of Sydney and Brisbane.
It says a number of vehicle manufacturers are also using Singapore as a transhipping point, where cars are offloaded onto to other vessels to offload at other Australian ports more efficiently.
Dealers outside Melbourne have told CarAdvice that they have sold more new cars than they have delivered and are urgently waiting for stock to arrive in the next four to eight weeks.
One dealer told CarAdvice that some distributors had been quicker off the mark than others to change their shipping, leaving some struggling to move cars out of Melbourne.
