Lockie Hipkins of Ballina joins the 2024 Skillaroos Training Squad after his impressive performance in the autobody repair category at the WorldSkills National Championships in Melbourne in August.
His success has been announced by the Motor Traders’ Association of New South Wales (MTA NSW), saying Hipkins will compete in the 47th WorldSkills International Competition in Lyon, France, in September 2024.
A “dedicated” MTA NSW apprentice, Hipkins has secured his place as one of Australia’s finest young talents in the automotive industry, says MTA NSW.
It says the 2024 Skillaroos Training Squad will undergo rigorous training for the international event, the first training camp started in November with others scheduled throughout this year.
“Lockie’s success is a testament to the commitment and expertise our apprentices bring to the automotive industry,” says MTA NSW chief executive Stavros Yallouridis.
“We’re incredibly proud of him and look forward to watching him shine on the international stage representing Australia.
“MTA NSW is deeply committed to supporting and nurturing the next generation of automotive professionals.”
Hipkins says he’s honoured to represent Australia at the 47th WorldSkills International Competition.
“I’ve had the privilege of learning from some of the best in the industry, and I owe a debt of gratitude to my mentors who have shared their expertise and guided me on this path.”
As part of MTA NSW’s support, the organisation is funding Hipkins’ trip by covering the cost of his flights, accommodation and training.

MTA NSW was a sponsor of last year’s WorldSkills National Championships and had six skilled apprentices representing the organisation at the latest event where Hipkins received a silver medal in the autobody repair category, while Newcastle apprentice Luke Callaway got a bronze medal in auto electrical, and spray-painting apprentice Neha Singh received a Certificate Of Excellence for her outstanding performance in the auto refinishing competition.
