Motorsport puts MTA NSW apprentices’ skill to the test

MTA NSW provided three of its apprentices with an opportunity to gain hands-on experience at two motorsport events.

During November’s Race Sydney and Bathurst International events, the apprentices were invited to learn and observe from the experienced mechanics on the ground.

The apprentices had the opportunity to assist with transporters, tyre fitting and removal, adjusting tyre pressure and measuring depth, performing basic mechanical work, set-up of garage equipment and more.

Naomie-Marie Alexopoulos, an automotive mechanical repair apprentice from Suttons Arncliffe, put her skills to the test at the Race Sydney event held at Sydney Motorsport Park from November 3 to 4.

Two more MTA NSW apprentices were invited to experience the Supercheap Auto Bathurst International at Mount Panorama the following weekend.

Katrina Nilsson, an automotive mechanical repair apprentice at National Capital Motors, Belconnen ACT, and Riley O’Leary, who specialises in steering and suspension technology and is employed at Bob Jane T-marts in Bathurst, seized the chance to advance their careers.

“I am extremely grateful for this opportunity – it was an amazing weekend full of hands-on experience and to be at the heart of such a great event was priceless, something I will never forget,” Nilsson says.

“The team on the ground welcomed me with open arms and never doubted me, my knowledge or skills for a second, I’d do it all again in a heartbeat.”

“We are thrilled to provide these exceptional opportunities for young apprentices in the automotive industry. Our commitment to nurturing future talent extends beyond the workshop and into the thrilling world of motorsport,” MTA NSW chief executive Stavros Yallouridis says.

“By empowering the next generation of automotive professionals and providing them with real-world experiences, MTA NSW aims to nurture a skilled workforce that can drive the industry forward,” he says.
