Hyundai Ioniq 5 recalled over parking mode issue

Hyundai Australia has confirmed that the fully electric Ioniq 5 has been recalled over a shifter issue that could cause cars to roll away while parked.

The problem stems from the car’s software within its shift control unit. Hyundai says that the issue can be mended via a software update that can be installed at selected dealerships.

“Due to a software issue with the shift control unit (SCU), the parking pawl (P) may fail. This could result in vehicle moving or rolling away whilst engaged in park position,” reads the recall notice.

“If the vehicle moves from the parked position while unattended, it may increase the risk of a crash causing injuries to others and possible damage to property.”

“Owners can contact their preferred authorised Hyundai Blue Drive dealer to have the SCU software updated, free of charge.”

According to the notice, a total of 578 vehicles in Australia have been impacted by the recall, with the recall applying to all variants of the Ioniq 5.

The recall is part of a global recall rollout that has previously seen approximately 20,000 vehicles recalled in North America. According to reports, four cases of cars rolling unexpectedly while parked have occurred in Korea.

The North American iteration of the recall also impacted Kia EV6 sales, with Kias making up almost half of that 20,000 figure. Kia Australia has yet to announce a similar recall for the EV6 locally.
