Battery electric models of the Genesis GV70 and Genesis G80, Australian variants of the Ford Mustang Mach-E, and hybrid GWM Haval Jolion vehicles have all been awarded top safety ratings by the Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP).
A five-star ANCAP safety rating for the Ford Mustang Mach-E battery electric vehicle was first published in December 2022 for New Zealand models and has been extended by ANCAP to include Australian variants, except for the GT, now it’s available to consumers there.
Full points were scored for protection offered to the driver in the side impact and oblique pole tests of the Mustang Mach-E, as well as child occupants in the side impact and frontal offset tests.
The front structure of the Mustang Mach-E presented a relatively high risk to occupants of an oncoming vehicle, and a 3.45-point penalty (out of 4.00 points) was applied.
Examining its collision avoidance capability, ANCAP says the Mach-E offered “good” performance for its lane-keeping and autonomous emergency braking capability.
“However, its AEB Backover and driver fatigue systems do not default ‘ON’ at the start of each journey so points were not awarded in these areas.”
Five-star ratings have also been available for internal combustion engine (ICE) variants of the GWM Haval Jolion, Genesis G80 and Genesis GV70 – applicable from the time of local market introduction.
These ratings now extend to the Jolion Hybrid, G80 Electrified and GV70 Electrified following additional destructive crash testing (frontal offset and oblique pole tests) undertaken to confirm comparable safety performance and high voltage battery integrity, says ANCAP.
The additional two tests undertaken on the GWM Haval Jolion Hybrid demonstrated comparable safety performance to the originally tested petrol variants, it adds.
For the Genesis G80 Electrified and GV70 Electrified, the additional tests also demonstrated comparable levels of safety performance, ANCAP states.
The post-crash assessment of the G80 Electrified however, revealed the automatic door locking function did not release following the frontal offset crash test, it explains. Genesis has undertaken to implement a production fix, ANCAP states.
“With these new results, there are now over 100 battery electric, hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and hydrogen models rated by ANCAP which hold a five-star ANCAP safety rating – providing plenty of choice to consumers across a range of vehicle brands, models and price-points,” says ANCAP chief executive Carla Hoorweg.
