Driving an electric vehicle could save you A$860 annually.
That’s according to a new US study which puts the annual saving at around US$595.
“You can generate big savings by switching to an electric vehicle and moving away from expensive petrol and diesel cars,” says Australia’s Climate Council advocacy head Dr Jennifer Rayner.
“To get even bigger savings, using public transport, or active transport such as walking or cycling, for short trips and in situations where you don’t need a car, are also great options.
“For example, if you’ve got two cars, you could replace one with an electric vehicle and then replace trips with the other through public transport and active transport.”
Rayner says transport is one of Australia’s fastest growing sources of greenhouse gas emissions.
“We need to see more electric vehicles on the road to drive down those emissions, so it’s crucial that government and the industry work together to deliver cleaner and cheaper vehicles to Australian drivers.
“The top priority is to make them more affordable and available by setting national fuel efficiency standards which will incentivise manufacturers to bring more of them to the Australian market.”
