The Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI) says the relatively flat result of new car sales for July 2022 compared to July 2021 shows the market has not normalised since the beginning of the pandemic.

A total of 84,461 vehicles were sold in July bringing the year-to-date total to 622,319.  This result represents a 0.4% increase on the same month in 2021.

Toyota led the market with a total of 19,565 vehicles sold. Mazda was next with 7879, followed by Hyundai (6792), Kia (6711) and Mitsubishi (5611). Toyota led Mazda with a margin of 11,686 vehicle sales and 13.9 market share points.

The Toyota Hilux was the highest selling model with 6441 sales reported. The Ford Ranger followed with 2934. Toyota’s RAV4 was next with 2437 followed by Mazda’s CX-5 (2346) and Hyundai’s Tucson (2186).

FCAI chief executive Tony Weber says manufacturing operations remain affected by plant shutdowns caused by COVID-19.

“Logistics, including shipping, also remains unpredictable,” Weber says.

“While small growth on the same month in 2021 is encouraging, we do not expect the supply of vehicles to Australia to stabilise in the near future. We are following the global trend of demand for new vehicles exceeding supply,” he says.

Sales in South Australia increased by 13.3% with 5,649 vehicles sold. Sales were also up in New South Wales by 10.9% with 26,519 vehicles sold. All other States and Territories recorded declines in sales. The ACT down 16.4% (1175); the Northern Territory down 16.6 per cent (756); Queensland down 1.1% (18,900); Tasmania down 13.2% (1,327); Victoria down 5.8% (22,076); and Western Australia down 9% (8,059).

The July 2022 market of 84,461 new vehicle sales is an increase of 300 vehicle sales or 0.4% against July 2021 (84,161). There were 26 selling days in July 2022 compared to 27 in July 2021, resulting in an increase of 131.4 vehicle sales per day.

The Passenger Vehicle Market is down by 1596 vehicle sales (-9.1%) over the same month last year; the Sports Utility Market is up by 2684 vehicle sales (6.4%); the Light Commercial Market is down by 930 vehicle sales (-4.4%) and the Heavy Commercial Vehicle Market is up by 142 vehicle sales (4%) versus July 2021.
