MG Motor has officially launched the all-new MG3 and MG3 Hybrid+ in Australia and New Zealand, marking the debut of its third-generation light hatchback.

It targets the new Hybrid+ model at buyers who want cheaper running costs but for whom plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) technology isn’t feasible.

Both the pure-petrol MG3 model and the MG3 Hybrid+ model are available in Excite and Essence specifications.

MG Motor Australia sold 15,430 of the former MG3 model in 2023, holding 43% of the light car segment.

It says this latest iteration of the MG3 boasts many enhancements, given it has been redesigned from the ground up, including a new platform, new exterior and interior design, reduced CO2 emissions, and improved fuel economy.

The new 1.5-litre petrol-electric Hybrid+ four-cylinder engine is at the heart of these advancements.

“The MG3 has been redesigned from the ground up and sets a new standard for hybrid and small petrol vehicles in Australia,” MG Motor Australia and New Zealand chief executive Peter Ciao says

“Our new MG3 Hybrid+ makes perfect sense for people looking for a stylish and tech-savvy yet affordable car. It promises impressive fuel economy without the environmental concerns of pure combustion power.

“It can take you from 0-100km/h in 8 seconds and is backed with a 7-year warranty plus fixed price services.”

“With Australia’s New Vehicle Emissions Standards set to kick into effect from next year, the new MG3 just got better with lower emissions driving and safety and technology at a great price,” he says.

 The all-new MG3 Hybrid+ provides CO2 emissions of 100g/km with a combined fuel consumption of 4.3/100km and a kerb weight of 1,298kg (Hybrid+ Excite), 1,308kg (Hybrid+ Essence) and MG3 petrol 1,199kg.

The Excite grade includes halogen headlights, 16-inch alloy wheels, and connectivity like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The Essence grade further enhances the offering with additions like a sunroof, LED headlights, a 360-degree camera and the ability to remotely turn on and off the air conditioner or heater via MG iSmart.

This new model introduces iSmart-connected services free of charge for one year from the vehicle’s registration date.

MG Motor says occupants are treated to a spacious interior in the new MG3, featuring a high-quality cockpit and a 10.25” infotainment display as standard. Safety has also been a focal point in this new model, with enhancements such as adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, automatic emergency braking, and blind-spot detection.

It says this positions the MG3 as a compelling option for those seeking to downsize, switch to new energy or replace their current car with one that does not compromise performance, safety, or technology.

The Hybrid+ powertrain technology debuted on the all-new MG3 and is the first conventional, non-plug-in hybrid system fitted to an MG model.

Producing a combined 155kW, the MG3 Hybrid+ returns economy figures of (4.3l/100km) and 100g/km CO2. This is aided by a 1.83kWh battery, allowing for an electric-assisted driving range – significantly boosting efficiency.

The MG3 Hybrid+ features a 75kW 1.5-litre petrol engine and 100kW electric motor, as well as separate generator motors, which enable a wide variety of powertrain operating modes.

The four-cylinder 1.5-litre Atkinson-cycle petrol engine produces 75kW, offering exceptionally high thermal efficiency at 41%. Combined with the 100kW electric motor, the Hybrid+ system provides a broad power range across the rev range, which says MG Motor.

With a more powerful motor installed, much of the high-load driving – accelerating, for example – can be carried out under electric power, with the petrol engine seamlessly supporting or taking over at higher speeds. Drivers can tailor the MG3’s responsiveness by choosing three driving modes – Eco, Standard, and Sport.

Pricing

  • MG3  Excite = $23,990 MSRP (AUD)
  • MG3  Essence = $25,990 MSRP (AUD)
  • MG3 Hybrid+ Excite = $27,990 MSRP (AUD)
  • MG3 Hybrid+ Essence = $29,990 MSRP (AUD)
