Porsche ambassador, former Formula One driver and endurance racing champion Mark Webber helped drive a Porsche Taycan 4S Cross Turismo from Darwin to Bondi Beach in 19 days, reaffirming the power and viability of EVs in long-distance travel.
The journey not only proved Taycan’s impressive range (484km) and performance but also showed the growing network of electric charging infrastructure with 27 recharging stops and 85 hours spent recharging – mostly overnight.
The expedition incorporated an array of charging options from outback cattle stations to fast-chargers and Porsche Destination Charging, the optional 22kW on-board charger able to optimise charging times in remote locations.
Covering 5000km, the drive included Nitmiluk National Park and Nitmiluk (Katherine) Gorge in the Northern Territory, Daly Waters, the Simpson Desert sand dune ‘Big Red’ in Queensland, Bathurst’s Mount Panorama Racetrack, the Blue Mountains, and Bondi Beach in Sydney.
The trip also highlighted the importance of transportation choices in minimising the environmental impact of long-distance travel, says Porsche.
“The technology in the all-electric Porsche Taycan has proven its performance capabilities under difficult conditions and, as the charging infrastructure further expands, electric vehicles are becoming more popular than ever, reshaping how Australians travel on their roads,” says Porsche Cars Australia chief executive and managing director Daniel Schmollinger.
“In Australia, there are currently 165 Porsche Destination Chargers across 87 locations, and the Official Porsche Centres’ ultra-rapid DC chargers are among the fastest charging stations available in Australia (up to 350kW).”
Meanwhile, the electric Macan will be available to customers in 2024, and the electric 718 is expected to be available for purchase next and will be followed by the all-electric Cayenne.
