Insuring the family car in Australian cities is cheapest in Perth, saving motorists up to $880 a year.
The big difference – with Western Australia’s car insurance premiums almost half those paid in Melbourne – has been revealed in the Australian Automobile Association’s latest quarterly transport affordability index to be released today, The Western Australian reports.
But it’s not all good news for WA motorists and commuters.
Home and car insurance is expected to rise 4% in 2017, more than double the inflation rate.
The index showed Perth commuters paid more for public transport than any other capital city, other than Sydney.
And Perth was ranked third-most expensive capital city for car registration and licensing costs, at $33.23 a week, compared with $43.03 a week in Sydney, $38.41 in Canberra, $31.28 in Melbourne and $29.85 in Adelaide.
Royal Automobile Club of Western Australia corporate affairs general manager Will Golsby says WA’s car registration and licensing costs have been increasing year on year.
“Registration has increased every year from $255.32 in 2013-14 to $344.51 in 2016-17,” he says.
“And this does not include compulsory third party or the additional $99 catastrophic injury support scheme insurance.
“The cost of motoring remains a high priority issue for us.”
