British adventurer Chris Ramsey aims to be the first person to drive from the magnetic North Pole to the South Pole next year, doing so in an electric Nissan Ariya.
Departing in March 2023, Ramsey will travel more than 27,359km spanning 14 countries from the Arctic through to North, Central and South America, before finally crossing to Antarctica to raise awareness of the climate crisis and the critical role EVs can play in reducing our carbon footprint.
Ramsey and his team have been preparing for the expedition for about four years, and welcome Nissan as the official vehicle partner.
The partnership will see the team explore the world’s most extreme yet beautiful terrains in the new Nissan Ariya e-4orce, with predicted temperatures ranging from minus 30⁰C to plus 30⁰C.
The EV will be modified and equipped by Arctic Trucks, a specialist in polar vehicles, which will also provide logistical support and expertise.
The team will face numerous challenges crossing Arctic sea ice and traversing the Americas, the many harsh environments sure to prove tough.
Ramsey and his expedition crew will encounter many cultures and communities along the globe-spanning drive, investigating solutions for sustainability issues, from polar melting to habitat loss and the environmental threats posed by the climate crisis.
The team will also get involved with local projects along the way.
“Our mission is to show that electric vehicles can tackle the harshest of environments – from the bitter cold of the poles to the hot and humid jungles of South America, and illustrate that they can meet the demands of drivers around the world, and encourage the switch to zero-emissions transport,” says Ramsey.
Nissan executive vice president, marketing and sales global head Asako Hoshino says Nissan is proud to announce the partnership.
“With e-4orce control technology providing enhanced stability and traction on a variety of surfaces, we know it will be the perfect partner for Chris and his team on their challenging all-electric journey.”
