
The Motor Industry Association of New Zealand says that the January 2024 result of 12,649 new vehicles registered is comparable to the prior year, coming in 1.3% higher than January 2023 (12,481 units) but 6.2% lower than January 2022 (13,479 units).
With the Clean Car Discount gone, the MIA says it is unsurprising that petrol and diesel vehicle registrations surged in January 2024, comprising 96.2% of January registrations at 12,173 units.
The top three overall market leaders in January 2024 for the New Zealand market were Toyota with 20.4% market share (2586 units), followed by Ford with 16.2% (2047 units) and Mitsubishi with 11.7% (1,474 units).
Overall, there were 8120 light passenger registrations, 3793 light commercial registrations and 736 heavy commercial registrations.
ICE vehicles dominated the market in January with a 77.5% market share (9807 units registered), followed by Hybrids with 18.7% (2366), BEV with 2.2% (274) and PHEV with 1.6% (202).
The top three market segments in January were SUV Medium (21.9%), followed by Pick-up/Chassis Cab 4×4 (20.4%) and SUV Compact (19.3%).
Light passenger vehicles (including SUVs)
Light passenger vehicle registrations of 8,120 are 12.4% (1154 units) lower than January 2023 and 9.0% (805 units) lower than January 2022.
Toyota led the market with 1632 units and 20.1% market share, followed by Mitsubishi with 1144 units and 14.1% market share and Kia with 828 units and 10.2% market share.
The Toyota RAV4 was the best-selling model with 619 units followed by the Mitsubishi ASX with 438 units and the Mitsubishi Outlander with 431 units.
SUV medium was the leading market segment with 2771 units (21.9% share), followed by SUV compact with 2437 units (19.3% share) and SUV Large with 1311 units (10.4% share of Light Passenger).
The small to medium segments comprised 50.4% of Light passenger.

Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs):
The top three models in January: BYD SEAL (31 units, 12.7% share), followed by Tesla Model Y (25 units, 10.2% share) and Toyota BZ4X (23 units, 9.4 share).
Plug-in Hybrid Vehicles (PHEVs):
The top three models in January: Porsche Cayenne (24 units, 11.9% share), followed by Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross (18 units, 8.9% share) and Volkswagen Touareg (14 units, 6.9% share).
Non-Plug-in Hybrid Vehicles (HEVs):
The top three models in January: Toyota RAV4 (568 units, 24.0% share), followed by Toyota Highlander (297 units, 12.6% share) and Toyota Corolla Cross (242 units, 10.2% share).
Petrol/Diesel (ICE):
The top three models in January: are Mitsubishi ASX (438 units, 10% share), followed by Mitsubishi Outlander (421 units, 10% share) and Kia Seltos (310 units, 7% share).
Light commercial vehicles
January registrations of 3,793 are 53.5% higher than January 2023 (1,322 units) and 7.4% lower than January 2022 (304 units).
Ford retained the market lead in January with 41.2% market share (1,563 units) followed by Toyota with 25.1% (953 units) and Mitsubishi third with 8.7% market share (330 units).
The top three models for January were the Ford Ranger (1,470 units), followed by Toyota Hilux (657 units), and Mitsubishi Triton (330 units). Light Commercial BEVs: 8 units in January.
