The recently updated Kia Sportage has earned ANCAP’s top safety rating; the safety body confirming a 5 star performance for the family SUV earlier this week.
The result comes by virtue of the Sportage scoring an 87 in both Adult Occupant Protection and Child Occupant Protection, as well as a 74 in Safety Assist and a 66 in Vulnerable Road User Protection.
ANCAP made particular note of the Sportage’s centre airbag existing between the driver’s seat and front passenger’s seat; a feature that more new vehicles are starting to include.
Simultaneously, ANCAP noted a handful of shortcomings. Namely, it pointed out that the Sportage’s Autonomous Emergency Braking system achieved “mixed results” when reacting to other vehicles, rating it ‘marginal’ overall.
“The new Kia Sportage has already proven to be a popular choice for fleets and families, and Kia is to be congratulated for achieving another 5 star safety rating against ANCAP’s 2020-2022 protocols,” says ANCAP chief executive Carla Hoorweg.
The Sportage is one of two SUVs to attract a 5 star rating from ANCAP this week, with the group also giving the same rating to the hybrid Haval H6.
The pure petrol H6 already boasted a 5 star ANCAP safety rating, with ANCAP verifying that the rating carries over to hybrid models following additional tests. It says the coupe shaped H6 GT will also receive a 5 star rating once it goes on sale.
“Two additional ANCAP crash tests were performed on hybrid variants of the GWM Haval H6, with comparable high levels of safety performance observed,” adds Hoorweg.
“This has enabled the existing 5 star ANCAP safety rating published earlier this year for petrol variants to be extended to H6 Hybrid models.
“The broadening of the 5 star ANCAP safety rating to H6 Hybrid variants provides additional choice for those in the market for a safe vehicle with a hybrid drivetrain.”
