The Victorian Automobile Chamber of Commerce (VACC) is saddened by the announcement that General Motors retiring the Holden brand by year’s end.
Holden’s devotees and car-buyers are no doubt devastated, but according to VACC this is not the end of the story.
“VACC is of course disappointed by the news that the Holden name will exit at the end of 2020,” VACC chief executive Geoff Gwilym says.
“The loss of up to 600 jobs – and the closure of the company’s famed design studio, along with its Lang Lang providing grounds – is devastating. But in the midst of this turmoil Holden dealers should be remembered.
“There are around 200 Holden dealers across Australia for whom this news leaves many questions.”
VACC, along with its new-car dealer division, the Victorian Automobile Dealers’ Association, wants reassurance regarding:
- The arrangements have been made for the ongoing service and parts supply for Holden vehicle owners
- That all Holden dealers are afforded protections under the Franchising Code, ensuring they are not out of pocket due to General Motors’ decision
- That all Holden dealers are kept fully informed about future developments, including business opportunities such as the proposed General Motors Speciality Vehicles
“The news of Holden’s demise comes three years after the company announced the end of local manufacturing. Today’s announcement heaps further bad news on Holden staff, customers and dealers. VGACC is sympathetic to all concerned and urges General Motors to ensure fairness in all its dealings.”
