Mercedes-Benz Trucks is displaying its zero-emission waste collection technology at the upcoming Australasian Waste and Recycling Expo in Sydney.

It will present the all-electric eEconic, part of Daimler Truck’s latest technology, at the July 26-27 event. The model is considered “ground-breaking” in the waste sector for not only producing no local emissions, but also operating in near silence.

Mercedes-Benz Trucks Australia will soon begin a local validation program for the eEconic that will become available in Australia and New Zealand “in the near future”, the company says.

The electric eEconic adds to the positives of the diesel Econic, which was developed from the ground-up to work in densely populated areas and is known for its excellent visibility, practicality and active safety features.

With production starting last year, the eEconic has impressed European customers with its advanced design, strong performance and efficiency.

The eEconic uses much of the same electric architecture as the Mercedes-Benz Trucks eActros, which is currently part of a validation programme in Australia and New Zealand.

Daimler Truck already has considerable experience with electric trucks in Australia and New Zealand. It was the first manufacturer to launch an all-electric truck when Fuso introduced the pioneering eCanter locally in 2021.

Mercedes-Benz Trucks Australia Pacific director Andrew Assimo says the eEconic will be an exciting feature of the upcoming expo.

“The waste and recycling industry is determined to reduce its transport carbon emissions in a practical way, so the eEconic is a perfect fit,” Assimo says.

“We are thrilled to be able to have it on our stand in Sydney before it gets to work as part of our validation trial.”

Mercedes-Benz Trucks says while it’s “keen to move forward with battery electric technology, it is also proud to help traditional internal combustion engine customers drive down their emissions”.
