BMW Australia confirms the BMW XM plug-in hybrid V8 is expected in the first half of next year.
The plug-in hybrid drive system brings together a newly developed 4.4-litre M TwinPower V8 engine and electric motor to deliver 480kW and 800Nm.
It’s the first BMW M car with an electrified drive system and the first standalone model developed by BMW’s high-performance division since the M1 supercar of 1978 and is priced from $297,900 (including GST and LCT but excluding on-road costs).
The plug-in hybrid drive system brings together a newly developed 4.4-litre M TwinPower V8 engine and electric motor to deliver 480kW and 800Nm and accelerates from zero to 100km/h in 4.3-seconds.
Compact installation of 27.5kWh lithium-ion high-voltage battery in underbody provides constant flow of power even under high loads, with electric driving enabling a 140km/h top speed and 82-88km range.
The Combined Charging Unit in the BMW XM enables AC charging at up to 7.4kW but doesn’t take DC fast charging.
Its M xDrive all-wheel-drive system maximises traction and agility with rear-wheel bias.
It comes with a stack of goodies, including the centre console control panel having buttons for personalising the driving experience – such as the M Hybrid button used to select the desired operating mode for the drive system. Drivers can choose between hybrid, electric and eControl modes.
The BMW Live Cockpit Professional and head-up display are standard.
The XM PHEV will be followed by the XM Label Red – the most powerful BMW M car made with 550kW/1000Nm – set to launch late next year.
Production of the BMW XM will start at BMW Group Plant Spartanburg in the US in December.
